Chasing the Dream, Olympic-Style, in Partnership with Shumsky

Only a few will win gold in the pool, on the track or on the slopes at the Olympics. But everyone can dream big dreams. Everyone can be a champion in their homes, their schools, their communities, in the fabric of their lives. In that spirit — the Olympic spirit — Dayton-based Shumsky and Boost Rewards is leading the way in supporting a one-of-a-kind, forward-looking project that ties together the sports we love to watch, the stories of some of the world’s greatest athletes and the events that connect us all. With it seeming increasingly likely that the United States will play host to an Olympics in either 2024 or 2028 in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California’s world-class Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism will be at the center of it all. Thanks in significant part to a partnership with Shumsky and Boost Rewards, three USC master’s-degree journalism students will spend this 2017-18 school year chasing their own Olympic-style dreams: reporting in-person from the world swimming championships July 21-30 in Budapest, Hungary; the world track and field championships Aug. 4-13 in London; and, next February, the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. “We believe, first and foremost, in people, and [...]

PPEF Awards Jayne Emoff Miller Scholarship

PPEF (Promotional Products Education Foundation) recently awarded the Jayne Emoff Miller scholarship to a future graduate of Brandeis University. Jayne Emoff Miller was the former owner of Shumsky Promotional, located in Dayton, OH. She was a second generation owner of Shumsky during the mid-1980’s into the mid-2000’s and one of the early diversity businesses certified as a Woman Owned Business. Miller was a part of Shumsky for over 40 years - selling, leading and molding teams. She developed her skills from a combination of the mentoring she received from her parents, trial and error, industry education, and her peers. Carmen Huang is the scholarship recipient and a first-generation college student. She and her family immigrated to America ten years ago and Ms. Huang views her college education as a way to repay her parents for their sacrifices. “This scholarship is more than just a form of financial aid—it is an encouragement that motivates me to continue pursuing my goals.” When Ms. Huang found out she was a scholarship recipient, she was “ecstatic.” Says Huang, “I am inspired to become someone like her [Jayne Emoff Miller]—someone who was not only a female representative of the corporate world but also an outstanding [...]

New Hire Kits to Build your Culture (and Brand)

Overwhelming, time-consuming, disorganized, unclear… Just a few words you might be using to define the on-boarding process at your company. We found ourselves in the same boat a couple of years ago and decided it was time for a change. Similar to our mission statement, we needed to design, develop, and deliver a new (seamless, organized, clear, and FUN) process to our new hires, including a new hire kit. Shumsky’s Wellness Team transformed into our HY5 Culture Team. While many of the onboarding tasks required attention from Human Resources, the Marketing team attacked the (non-existent) new hire kit. We implemented new hire kits, or branded “swag bags”, to include our 2016 promotional products catalog, a branded baseball tshirt, personalized license plate, fanny pack, candy, and custom journal book with a letter from our owner that explains the meaning behind our mission, vision, and core values. The most important component of the swag bag is the personalized license plate which hangs at each employee’s desk. For each year of service, employees receive a new sticker or tag and it helps the new hires learn names much more quickly since they are all hanging at each person’s workstation. Swag bags are waiting at the new [...]

4 Big Benefits of an Online Company Store

Why You Need an Online Company Store You’ve heard about the concept of online stores here and there, but haven’t taken the step (okay, feels more like a giant leap) to develop an online company store for your promotional products. Your marketing and sales teams  have all been independently ordering based on their promotional needs, and that’s worked out just fine, right? Well, except that one time an account manager used an old logo for his last order of mugs, in the wrong color. Come to think of it, you don’t really have a good way of tracking who is ordering what and how often. For these reasons (and many more), let us talk you through the 4 most valuable reasons to think about starting an online store: Brand Management: Your organization has spent countless hours developing brand guidelines for many reasons. In its simplest form, you want to deliver a consistent brand experience to your target audience. An online company store ensures your branding will be consistent across a wide range of promotional products. With 24/7 access, your team can efficiently order brand compliant products for their events. This is the marketing and creative team’s dream -- a centralized [...]

Minor League Baseball Team Delivers Creativity and Fun in Season Ticket Package

Shumsky helps drive loyalty and maintain customer retention for season ticket holders of the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team. The Need Our client needed a vehicle to deliver a season ticket package to over 5,000 holders and create buzz for the upcoming baseball season. The Solution Our creative team began brainstorming ideas for a fun way to package season tickets. Previously used concepts included a custom home plate box, metal tin/lunch box, and a wooden cigar box all designed and printed with Dayton Dragons branding. Together, we designed and presented an imitation of a Wheaties cereal box, using the Dragons mascot, Heater, on the front of the box and called it “Heaties”. The box contained a sample of the Limited Edition cereal, season tickets and owner’s manual (directions to stadium, seating charts, and contact info for staff), magnet and pocket schedule, and a “free prize” (custom promotional keychains).  The full-color imprint on the box was jam-packed with information such as the opening date, social media icons, serving sizes (of fun!), alumni players, QR codes, and six puzzles and quizzes. The Results Our client has maintained a 92% retention rate for season ticket holders. This project was developed within budget [...]

Protecting Your Brand with these Easy Steps

How to effectively use branding guidelines One of the most important services Shumsky offers is helping our clients protect their valued brand. As much as we help promote your brand by providing promotional products, we are also responsible for ensuring your brand isn’t misused or abused in the process. The last thing you want is for your promotional partner to not have access to the correct usage of colors, sizes, or other specific guidelines created to prevent misuse. So, how do you avoid this kind of misuse? You can start by proactively sharing your branding guidelines with our team or your branding partner.  Many of you might be familiar with using specific PMS colors in your logo (and many of you might know these PMS colors like the back of your hand). However, many brands choose to elaborate much further by specifying certain requirements in branding guidelines, such as: Restricting the use of certain backgrounds colors/patterns Requiring a predetermined amount of clear space around the logo A minimum size that the logo may be printed Specific tag lines that may or may not be used                         Every brand has [...]
